77 00:03:41.222 --> 00:03:43.882 line:15% And the blind man said unto him, Lord, 78 00:03:43.882 --> 00:03:46.362 line:15% that I might receive my sight. 79 00:03:46.362 --> 00:03:49.322 line:15% And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way. 80 00:03:49.322 --> 00:03:51.862 line:15% Thy faith hath made thee whole. 81 00:03:51.862 --> 00:03:54.482 line:15% And immediately he received his sight 82 00:03:54.482 --> 00:03:57.442 line:15% and followed Jesus in the way. 83 00:03:57.442 --> 00:03:58.982 This is just amazing. 84 00:03:58.982 --> 00:04:00.722 But today we're going to go back 85 00:04:00.722 --> 00:04:02.642 and we're going to begin in verse 46 86 00:04:02.642 --> 00:04:04.162 and take this apart 87 00:04:04.162 --> 00:04:07.062 so we really understand this event much better. 88 00:04:07.062 --> 00:04:11.362 And in verse 46, the Bible says - And they came to Jericho. 89 00:04:11.362 --> 00:04:13.402 And as he went out of Jericho with his disciples 90 00:04:13.402 --> 00:04:15.922 and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son 91 00:04:15.922 --> 00:04:19.422 of Timaeus, set by the highwayside begging. 92 00:04:19.422 --> 00:04:21.942 But notice it says Jericho. 93 00:04:21.942 --> 00:04:23.482 Let's pause just for a moment 94 00:04:23.482 --> 00:04:25.902 and talk about what we know about the ancient 95 00:04:25.902 --> 00:04:26.982 city of Jericho. 96 00:04:27.842 --> 00:04:30.882 The city of Jericho served as a pivotal gateway for those 97 00:04:30.882 --> 00:04:32.402 who were traveling to Jerusalem, 98 00:04:32.402 --> 00:04:34.562 and it was located near the southern tip 99 00:04:34.562 --> 00:04:37.902 of the Jordan Valley, just north of the Dead Sea. 100 00:04:37.902 --> 00:04:40.022 And Jericho was a hub for travelers 101 00:04:40.022 --> 00:04:41.562 who were journeying to Jerusalem. 102 00:04:41.562 --> 00:04:44.502 And the majority of travelers would turn westward, 103 00:04:44.502 --> 00:04:48.282 navigating the upward ascent for about 15 miles 104 00:04:48.282 --> 00:04:50.882 through rugged hills to reach Jerusalem. 105 00:04:50.882 --> 00:04:54.342 Matthew, Mark, and Luke each tell us about Jesus' passage 106 00:04:54.342 --> 00:04:57.643 through Jericho as he was on his way to Jerusalem. 107 00:04:57.643 --> 00:05:01.043 For Jesus, Jericho was not only a gateway to Jerusalem, 108 00:05:01.043 --> 00:05:03.443 but became the passage to the culmination 109 00:05:03.443 --> 00:05:06.443 line:15% of his earthly ministry in the moments of his passion. 110 00:05:06.443 --> 00:05:08.743 line:15% But in history, Jericho was one 111 00:05:08.743 --> 00:05:11.183 line:15% of the world's earliest cities. 112 00:05:11.183 --> 00:05:13.943 line:15% In Deuteronomy 34:3, it's described 113 00:05:13.943 --> 00:05:16.003 as the city of palm trees. 114 00:05:16.003 --> 00:05:18.923 It's traditionally known for the falling of its walls 115 00:05:18.923 --> 00:05:20.943 during Joshua's conquest. 116 00:05:20.943 --> 00:05:23.923 And Jericho finally arose from the ashes 117 00:05:23.923 --> 00:05:27.923 and attained fame as a city of immense wealth. 118 00:05:27.923 --> 00:05:31.743 Mark Anthony later sees this jewel of the desert 119 00:05:31.743 --> 00:05:34.423 and in a gesture of affection, he gifted it 120 00:05:34.423 --> 00:05:36.803 to his girlfriend, Cleopatra. 121 00:05:36.803 --> 00:05:40.923 And then Herod the great leased this oasis from Cleopatra. 122 00:05:40.923 --> 00:05:44.063 And then after the deaths of Mark Anthony and Cleopatra, 123 00:05:44.063 --> 00:05:47.163 he solidified his dominion over Jericho. 124 00:05:47.163 --> 00:05:50.703 His architectural genius transformed the city 125 00:05:50.703 --> 00:05:55.303 with palatial complexes that featured opulent courtyards, 126 00:05:55.303 --> 00:05:59.003 lush sunken gardens, and shimmering swimming pools. 127 00:05:59.003 --> 00:06:02.023 In fact, Herod made Jericho his winter haven 128 00:06:02.023 --> 00:06:04.183 and he died there in 4-BC. 129 00:06:04.183 --> 00:06:07.143 line:15% But in the time of Jesus, Herod's palatial retreat 130 00:06:07.143 --> 00:06:10.303 line:15% and accommodations in Jericho were still being used 131 00:06:10.303 --> 00:06:12.383 by members of the Herodian family. 132 00:06:12.383 --> 00:06:15.243 But Matthew, Mark, and Luke each recorded events 133 00:06:15.243 --> 00:06:18.683 that took place as Jesus left Jericho on his way 134 00:06:18.683 --> 00:06:20.403 to Jerusalem. 135 00:06:20.403 --> 00:06:23.323 So that's a little history about the city of Jericho. 136 00:06:23.323 --> 00:06:26.283 But now we go back to verse 46, which says, 137 00:06:26.283 --> 00:06:27.983 And they came to Jericho. 138 00:06:27.983 --> 00:06:30.083 And as he went out of Jericho with his disciples 139 00:06:30.083 --> 00:06:33.683 and a great number of people, Blind Bartirmaeus, the son 140 00:06:33.683 --> 00:06:35.063 of Timaeus, sat 141 00:06:35.063 --> 00:06:38.504 by the highway side begging. But notice it says it was a 142 00:06:38.504 --> 00:06:41.144 great number or a great multitude. 143 00:06:41.144 --> 00:06:44.304 The word great is the word ochlos. 144 00:06:44.304 --> 00:06:46.864 The word multitude, the word hikanos. 145 00:06:46.864 --> 00:06:48.404 When you put these two words together, 146 00:06:48.404 --> 00:06:49.804 it's very, very important. 147 00:06:49.804 --> 00:06:51.304 For example, the word ochlos 148 00:06:51.304 --> 00:06:56.004 line:15% by itself already describes a very sizable multitude. 149 00:06:56.004 --> 00:06:57.584 line:15% But when you add the word hikanos, 150 00:06:57.584 --> 00:06:59.624 line:15% which could be translated large, 151 00:06:59.624 --> 00:07:02.764 line:15% it depicts a massive multitude that was following him 152 00:07:02.764 --> 00:07:04.464 line:15% as he exited the city that day. 153 00:07:04.464 --> 00:07:06.144 It wasn't just a multitude. 154 00:07:06.144 --> 00:07:10.124 It was a massive, massive multitude that was following Jesus 155 00:07:10.124 --> 00:07:12.084 as he exited the city. 156 00:07:12.084 --> 00:07:16.364 And as he exited the city, there was blind Bartimaeus. 157 00:07:16.364
