WEBVTT 00:01.516 --> 00:04.876 Welcome to the Valley Baptist Church sermon podcast. 00:04.876 --> 00:08.316 We're so glad you're here, and we hope this message inspires you, 00:08.316 --> 00:12.476 builds your faith, and moves you toward a deep relationship with God. 00:12.476 --> 00:15.516 Today, you'll find great insight into the Bible 00:15.516 --> 00:18.236 and learn how you can apply it straight to your life. 00:18.236 --> 00:20.756 So welcome and enjoy the message. 00:21.428 --> 00:26.648 If you're ready to have fun, open your Bible to Genesis chapter 5. 00:26.648 --> 00:34.228 We're going to be covering 1,700 years in one sermon, and so get ready to go. 00:34.591 --> 00:40.831 Now we've been in a series of messages through the first 11 chapters of Genesis. 00:40.831 --> 00:44.831 And the book of Genesis is the book of beginnings. 00:44.831 --> 00:51.331 Now Pastor Phil, or I'm sorry, Pastor Brian on Wednesday nights is preaching through the book of Revelation, 00:51.331 --> 00:53.931 which is the book of conclusions. 00:53.931 --> 00:58.211 But on Sunday morning we're looking at the book of beginnings. 00:58.216 --> 01:05.036 And what we see is that every major theme, every major problem, and every major promise 01:05.036 --> 01:08.516 is present in seed form. 01:08.516 --> 01:13.616 And so if you want to understand your Bible, it's important for you to understand the first 01:13.616 --> 01:17.076 eleven chapters of Genesis. 01:17.065 --> 01:23.365 Not only that, but if you want to understand reality as it truly is, then it's important 01:23.365 --> 01:30.885 that you understand what God reveals about Himself and His nature and us and reality 01:30.885 --> 01:33.965 in the book of Genesis. 01:33.957 --> 01:40.417 And so Genesis helps us to understand life in a way that makes sense. 01:41.077 --> 01:46.597 And so today we're going to be in Genesis chapter 5, and since we have 1,700 years to 01:46.597 --> 01:48.617 cover, we're just going to jump right in. 01:48.617 --> 01:50.697 Verse number 1. 01:51.980 --> 01:55.160 This is the book of the genealogy of Adam. 01:55.160 --> 02:00.480 In the day that God created man, He made him in the likeness of God. 02:00.480 --> 02:04.760 He created them male and female and blessed them and called them mankind in the day they 02:04.760 --> 02:06.880 were created. 02:06.880 --> 02:13.900 And Adam lived 130 years and begot a son in his own likeness after his image and named 02:13.900 --> 02:16.340 him Seth. 02:16.330 --> 02:23.450 Now, Moses gives us the highlights of what he has already told us in the first few chapters 02:23.450 --> 02:31.210 of Genesis. And what we see is that Genesis answers the most fundamental questions of life. 02:31.930 --> 02:37.930 The first question that it answers is, where did everything come from? 02:37.930 --> 02:43.330 One of the most fundamental questions of life is why is there something rather than nothing? 02:44.110 --> 02:47.750 And so everything didn't come from nowhere and nothing. 02:48.370 --> 02:50.290 Everything came from someone. 02:51.650 --> 02:56.150 God is the creator who created the creation. 02:56.770 --> 03:00.870 He's the one who made everything, and he made us. 03:01.390 --> 03:06.670 The second question that we see here is that God answers the question, 03:06.970 --> 03:10.730 who am I, or who is man, or who are we? 03:11.430 --> 03:15.350 Now, the three most significant things about us are, 03:15.350 --> 03:19.850 first, we are made in the image of God. 03:20.320 --> 03:25.320 That means that you have been given dignity and dominion. 03:26.500 --> 03:31.460 And so every single human bears God's image 03:31.460 --> 03:35.340 because God has given each one of us 03:35.340 --> 03:39.020 dignity, value, and worth. 03:39.018 --> 03:42.498 You have value not because you're rich, 03:42.498 --> 03:46.318 not because you're smart, not because you're successful, 03:46.318 --> 03:49.078 but because you have been made by God 03:49.078 --> 03:53.878 and you have been created in his image. 03:53.878 --> 03:55.918 And so that applies to everyone. 03:55.927 --> 04:01.267 It applies to the born and the unborn, the healthy and the sick, the rich and the poor, 04:01.307 --> 04:05.647 the young and the old, the brilliant and the simple. 04:05.687 --> 04:09.767 We all bear God's image. 04:09.807 --> 04:17.607 Now Genesis and Jesus both teach that human life belongs to God. 04:17.611 --> 04:21.871 And so we are never to take human life. 04:21.871 --> 04:24.371 Now notice in Genesis, God gives us dominion 04:24.371 --> 04:26.811 over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air 04:26.811 --> 04:28.471 and the beast of the field. 04:28.471 --> 04:31.611 He gives us dominion over the earth and the plants 04:31.611 --> 04:34.231 that grow upon it, but he never gives us dominion 04:34.231 --> 04:37.711 over human life because human life belongs 04:37.711 --> 04:40.271 to the dominion of God. 04:40.271 --> 04:44.471 And so we are not to take human life because it's sacred. 04:45.033 --> 04:52.713 From the unborn baby to the aged elder, every human life is sacred and should be protected 04:52.713 --> 04:56.053 and is to be treated with respect. 04:56.993 --> 04:59.893 We see that we are made in God's image. 04:59.993 --> 05:02.413 It also says that we are made male and female. 05:02.413 --> 05:10.213 And third, we are told that we are made both body and soul. 05:10.210 --> 05:16.870 Now, all three of those truths about us are highly attacked within our culture, but they 05:16.870 --> 05:21.190 are all three clearly taught in Scripture. 05:21.190 --> 05:25.630 They are all in a sense, and in some ways, common sense. 05:25.630 --> 05:29.490 But have you ever noticed that sometime common sense isn't so common? 05:30.292 --> 05:35.192 These are very simple truths that we are made in God's image, that we are male and female, 05:35.192 --> 05:36.792 that we are both body and soul. 05:36.792 --> 05:44.872 They are very simple truths, but simplicity becomes profundity in the midst of moral confusion 05:44.872 --> 05:46.512 and chaos. 05:46.508 --> 05:52.208 And because we live in a culture that has rebelled against God, that has rejected His truth, 05:52.208 --> 05:56.448 we have rejected who we were made to be. 05:57.328 --> 06:01.468 The third question that Genesis answers is, what is wrong? 06:02.388 --> 06:10.608 We see in Genesis that Satan, temptation, and sin come into God's perfect creation and corrupt it, 06:10.608 --> 06:17.288 and they lead us to be separated from God, from self, and from one another. 06:18.108 --> 06:22.008 We can see within our own life that something is not right. 06:22.655 --> 06:26.615 that we were meant to be more than what we are, 06:26.975 --> 06:30.055 that something is wrong not only within us, 06:30.075 --> 06:34.255 but something is wrong in the world around us. 06:34.755 --> 06:39.375 And because of that, we look for a solution. 06:40.335 --> 06:43.355 Now, how you answer the question of what is wrong is important 06:43.355 --> 06:47.495 because it determines how you determine what is the solution. 06:48.457 --> 06:58.357 And so the answer to what is wrong is sin, and the solution is God's grace and forgiveness in the Lord Jesus Christ. 06:59.197 --> 07:05.557 And in verse number 3, we see that we inherit a sin nature from Adam. 07:06.277 --> 07:09.037 that Adam has a son by the name of Seth. 07:09.037 --> 07:12.577 We've already seen that Cain had a sin nature 07:12.577 --> 07:13.817 that was passed down to him, 07:13.817 --> 07:18.017 but now we see all of Adam's descendants have a sin nature, 07:18.217 --> 07:21.877 and they are born in the likeness of Adam. 07:22.777 --> 07:26.117 And so in chapter 5, we see sin spreading 07:26.117 --> 07:29.777 in such a way that it infects and affects 07:29.777 --> 07:34.397 every person who is a descendant of Adam. 07:35.183 --> 07:46.783 And one of the things that we understand from the Bible is that not only these people here in chapter 5 are descendants of Adam, but you and I are descendants of Adam as well. 07:46.783 --> 07:52.143 And so let's continue the story in verse number 4. 07:53.948 --> 07:59.408 And after Adam, or he, begot Seth, the days of Adam were 800 years, and he had sons and daughters. 07:59.788 --> 08:03.508 So all the days of Adam lived were 930 years, and he died. 08:04.268 --> 08:07.148 Seth lived 105 years and begot Enosh. 08:07.748 --> 08:11.868 After he begot Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had sons and daughters. 08:12.208 --> 08:15.588 So all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died. 08:16.173 --> 08:18.693 Enosh lived 90 years and begot Canaan. 08:19.193 --> 08:24.693 After he begot Canaan, Enosh lived 815 years and had sons and daughters. 08:24.693 --> 08:30.693 So all the days of Enosh were 905 years and he died. 08:31.333 --> 08:39.293 Now one of the questions that we have of this passage is why such long lifespans? 08:39.292 --> 08:42.892 Now there have been different explanations that people have given. 08:42.892 --> 08:48.652 One is that people have said it was due to environmental factors, 08:48.652 --> 08:52.412 that the soil was better and different in those days, 08:52.412 --> 08:55.852 that the atmosphere was different, that the environment was different, 08:55.852 --> 09:01.452 which led to longer lifespans of humankind. 09:01.448 --> 09:07.488 Another explanation is that it's due to genetic deterioration over time. 09:07.968 --> 09:12.808 That because of the effects of sin that our DNA has deteriorated. 09:13.508 --> 09:19.048 That our biology and our code has deteriorated and led to shorter lifespans. 09:20.388 --> 09:24.048 Another explanation that people have given is that... 09:24.044 --> 09:30.544 God has chosen to limit human lifespans in order to limit human evil. 09:31.364 --> 09:35.504 Now, the truth is we don't know which one of those explanations is right 09:35.504 --> 09:39.064 or if maybe there's another explanation that we don't know. 09:39.464 --> 09:44.504 But what we do know is that mankind is not getting better and better. 09:44.504 --> 09:48.244 What we see is that mankind is getting worse. 09:49.104 --> 09:52.344 Now, that's the opposite of what evolution teaches. 09:52.867 --> 09:56.207 Evolution teaches that mankind is getting better and better, 09:56.827 --> 09:58.487 that we're just going to usher in utopia, 09:58.787 --> 10:01.547 and we're moving more and more towards perfection. 10:01.767 --> 10:03.267 But the Bible teaches the opposite, 10:03.507 --> 10:08.887 that we were created by God perfect, morally right. 10:09.826 --> 10:20.626 But because of sin we have fallen, and sin has spread from Adam to all who are descendants of Adam." 10:20.626 --> 10:28.986 Now there are two lineages that are being traced in Genesis chapter 4 and Genesis chapter 5. 10:28.979 --> 10:33.719 The first lineage is the line of Cain, which we saw last week. 10:33.719 --> 10:39.759 And the line of Cain is an example of what it looks like when we embrace sin. 10:39.759 --> 10:48.659 We see culture, and we see art, and we see agriculture, and we see industry and commerce, 10:48.659 --> 10:52.699 and we see civilization, but it's a civilization without God. 10:52.688 --> 11:00.928 And it leads to incredible pride and violence and division and all kinds of problems. 11:01.788 --> 11:06.628 But then we see that Adam and Eve had another son by the name of Seth. 11:06.908 --> 11:14.768 And Genesis 5 follows the line of Seth all the way up until the time of the great flood. 11:16.060 --> 11:21.120 Now, I know when you were coming to church this morning, you were talking to your husband and wife and saying, 11:21.600 --> 11:24.920 boy, I hope we're going to talk about a genealogy this morning. 11:25.700 --> 11:29.660 Boy, I haven't heard a good genealogy sermon in quite some time. 11:29.700 --> 11:30.880 I'm ready to go. 11:31.480 --> 11:33.440 Well, today is your day. 11:34.020 --> 11:37.920 You've been waiting for a long time, and brothers and sisters, get ready. 11:38.040 --> 11:39.100 That's what we're going to do. 11:40.360 --> 11:44.760 Genealogies and lineages are a big deal within the Bible. 11:45.305 --> 11:49.525 In fact, we see them over and over again. 11:49.525 --> 11:51.525 Now you might think, well, why do we have that? 11:51.525 --> 11:54.665 Well, I have found a good student of the Bible 11:54.665 --> 11:56.705 is a confused student of the Bible. 11:57.860 --> 11:59.600 you start asking questions, right? 11:59.600 --> 12:01.100 Why is that there? 12:01.100 --> 12:03.960 And I love to talk about obscure passages 12:03.960 --> 12:06.480 where it's hard to understand what's going on there 12:06.480 --> 12:09.680 because when you really start to understand those passages 12:09.680 --> 12:10.980 that you don't understand, 12:10.980 --> 12:14.880 it unlocks and opens up the meaning of the Bible 12:14.880 --> 12:17.760 in ways that you didn't know before. 12:17.760 --> 12:20.000 And so it's very important 12:20.000 --> 12:25.340 that we understand that genealogies and lineages are a big deal in the Bible. 12:26.280 --> 12:32.880 In fact, you have to understand genealogies in order to understand the Bible and how God thinks. 12:33.880 --> 12:41.860 And one of the first reasons that they are so important is that the Christian faith is based on history. 12:41.860 --> 12:43.506 History. 12:43.507 --> 12:47.727 Everything that we believe happened in a particular time 12:47.727 --> 12:52.127 and a particular place to particular people. 12:52.127 --> 12:57.127 In fact, if you look all the way forward in Luke 3, 12:57.427 --> 13:01.247 we find the genealogy of the Lord Jesus Christ. 13:01.630 --> 13:04.590 and it shows us that Jesus was a man 13:04.670 --> 13:08.430 who is biologically and historically connected 13:08.510 --> 13:12.170 to all of these people in Genesis chapter 5. 13:12.250 --> 13:16.210 God is showing us that he had a plan. 13:16.290 --> 13:20.510 Not only that, but the life and death and resurrection of Jesus 13:20.590 --> 13:23.170 are historical events, 13:23.250 --> 13:28.550 that God the Creator entered into his own creation 13:28.681 --> 13:32.641 He entered into a particular time and a particular place 13:32.641 --> 13:37.381 and a particular people in order to provide salvation 13:37.381 --> 13:42.381 and restore creation back into a relationship with God. 13:43.381 --> 13:47.961 And so Genesis chapter five is showing us a theology 13:47.961 --> 13:52.261 of the seed that we saw in Genesis 3.15. 13:52.261 --> 13:55.021 That the seed of woman is coming. 13:55.445 --> 13:59.445 who will crush the head of Satan, who is our adversary, 13:59.445 --> 14:02.205 who will defeat sin and death, 14:02.205 --> 14:06.745 and will restore us back to relationship with God. 14:06.745 --> 14:10.385 You see, the Bible is not just a bunch of stories. 14:10.385 --> 14:15.385 It is one story of God's incredible and amazing grace 14:17.345 --> 14:19.805 in the Lord Jesus Christ. 14:19.812 --> 14:24.752 See, God has always had a plan to save us from our sin. 14:25.372 --> 14:31.612 In Genesis chapter 5, God is showing us that there is going to come a seed 14:31.612 --> 14:38.252 who will save us and restore us back to the rule and the reign of God. 14:38.252 --> 14:42.652 Look what he says in verse number 12. 14:43.606 --> 15:12.986 It says, 15:12.985 --> 15:17.525 And after he begot Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had sons and daughters. 15:17.525 --> 15:22.905 So all the days of Jared were 962 years and he died. 15:23.745 --> 15:26.365 Now try saying that 10 times real fast. 15:26.505 --> 15:27.744 Mahalalel. 15:27.745 --> 15:29.305 I'm not even used to saying that. 15:29.445 --> 15:32.365 But by the third service, I think I've got it down. 15:32.625 --> 15:34.124 All right? 15:34.125 --> 15:39.245 Now there's another reason that genealogies are so important in the Bible, 15:39.405 --> 15:42.865 and that is that God thinks generationally. 15:44.744 --> 15:51.144 And because the Bible is God's word, the Bible thinks generationally as well. 15:51.964 --> 15:59.904 And so I want to encourage us to stop thinking instantaneously and to start thinking generationally 15:59.904 --> 16:02.484 in the way that God thinks. 16:03.184 --> 16:10.604 Stop thinking just about yourself and start thinking about the next generation and the 16:10.604 --> 16:12.404 ones that will come after that. 16:13.448 --> 16:19.488 Let me ask you, will people with your last name love God a long time from now? 16:21.108 --> 16:23.548 Brothers and sisters, that's the framework of the Bible. 16:24.808 --> 16:26.208 That's the heart of God. 16:26.908 --> 16:28.988 And that should be our heart as well. 16:29.088 --> 16:31.448 We should think generationally. 16:31.528 --> 16:33.108 We shouldn't just think about ourselves. 16:33.108 --> 16:39.688 We should think about those who are not yet here, who have not yet come to Christ but need Jesus. 16:40.408 --> 16:42.208 That's the way we need to think. 16:42.997 --> 16:46.997 Jonathan Edwards, one of the great pastors of early American history, 16:46.997 --> 16:51.237 it's said that every day he would pray for the fifth generation. 16:51.717 --> 16:55.617 He would pray not just for his kids, not just for his grandkids, 16:55.697 --> 16:57.437 but all the way to the fifth generation. 16:57.737 --> 17:01.197 And you can follow that line and see that God did amazing things 17:01.197 --> 17:03.377 in the generations that followed. 17:04.557 --> 17:06.917 And so start asking yourself, 17:07.557 --> 17:10.277 what do I want to be true of my great-grandchildren? 17:12.359 --> 17:14.199 Do I want them to know Jesus? 17:15.299 --> 17:16.839 Do I want them to love God? 17:18.468 --> 17:19.848 What do I want them to be? 17:19.988 --> 17:21.468 What do I want them to know? 17:21.628 --> 17:23.028 What do I want them to do? 17:23.248 --> 17:27.728 And then start framing your life and your family around those things. 17:27.728 --> 17:33.728 Start framing your life and your family around the lordship of Jesus Christ. 17:34.948 --> 17:42.628 Now, the Bible teaches that every person inherits a spiritual lineage and passes on a spiritual lineage. 17:43.730 --> 17:44.850 Now you may say this morning, 17:44.850 --> 17:47.110 well I don't have a spiritual lineage. 17:47.690 --> 17:48.890 Well here's the good news. 17:49.590 --> 17:50.830 You can change your lineage. 17:51.950 --> 17:55.690 You see, all of us are affected by what has come before us, 17:56.090 --> 17:59.930 but all of us are also connected to what will come after us. 18:00.490 --> 18:03.510 And when we meet Jesus, he changes our lineage. 18:04.490 --> 18:06.770 He can make you the first link 18:06.770 --> 18:10.710 in a chain of people who walk with God. 18:11.624 --> 18:17.204 Jesus can change your life and he can use you to change your family's desires 18:17.624 --> 18:22.544 and your family's destinies if you'll surrender yourself to him. 18:24.504 --> 18:28.004 Now, as we look at the New Testament, what we see is that Jesus was more 18:28.004 --> 18:32.084 interested in succession than he was success. 18:32.924 --> 18:39.644 And what I mean by that is that without succession, success doesn't last very long. 18:40.447 --> 18:44.787 And so I want to encourage you to stop thinking about the instant 18:44.787 --> 18:47.727 and to start thinking about the future. 18:48.727 --> 18:52.927 Stop thinking about today or this week or even this year 18:52.927 --> 18:56.887 and to start investing your life in the lives of others 18:56.887 --> 18:59.427 and those who are to come. 19:00.578 --> 19:06.238 Now thinking generationally is not just for married people, it's for all of us. 19:06.238 --> 19:11.018 We need to be a church that thinks generationally. 19:11.018 --> 19:17.238 We need to be a church that thinks about what we're going to leave behind and what Bakersfield 19:17.238 --> 19:20.278 is going to look like 40 years from now. 19:20.278 --> 19:23.798 What Kern County is going to look like 80 years from now. 19:23.798 --> 19:25.578 We need to be a church. 19:25.925 --> 19:29.465 that is thinking about what God is doing 19:29.465 --> 19:31.685 in this time in history 19:31.685 --> 19:34.565 and what he wants to do in the lives of others. 19:34.565 --> 19:38.105 We need to be a church that makes disciples of Jesus Christ 19:38.105 --> 19:40.305 who make disciples of Jesus Christ 19:40.305 --> 19:42.905 who make disciples of Jesus Christ. 19:42.905 --> 19:45.225 That is God's purpose. 19:45.225 --> 19:48.365 That is God's plan. 19:48.365 --> 19:51.705 God is looking not just in the instant, 19:51.710 --> 19:58.670 He is thinking about the generations to come, and we need to join Him and have a bigger 19:58.670 --> 20:04.010 perspective of God's plan and purpose for our life. 20:04.010 --> 20:07.390 Notice what it says in verse number 21. 20:07.390 --> 20:12.750 It said, Enoch lived 65 years and begot Methuselah. 20:12.750 --> 20:18.650 And after he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and had sons and daughters. 20:18.659 --> 20:21.999 So all the days of Enoch were 365 years, 20:22.179 --> 20:24.139 and Enoch walked with God, 20:24.539 --> 20:28.239 and he was not, for God took him. 20:29.543 --> 20:34.543 I love that phrase, that Enoch walked with God. 20:34.643 --> 20:36.983 This is the first time that that phrase 20:36.983 --> 20:38.823 is used in the Bible, but it will be used 20:38.823 --> 20:42.723 many more times as we go forward. 20:42.723 --> 20:46.023 Now, walking with God is a metaphor 20:46.023 --> 20:51.023 to describe our intimacy and our communion with God. 20:52.063 --> 20:58.303 God wants to have a personal relationship with you. 20:58.298 --> 21:03.298 And so Christianity is not just a religion that is external. 21:04.298 --> 21:09.098 It is a relationship with God that is internal. 21:10.018 --> 21:14.558 Our greatest purpose and our greatest blessing 21:14.558 --> 21:19.558 is to walk with God, to know God and enjoy Him. 21:21.238 --> 21:23.978 You know, one of the desires of my heart, 21:24.826 --> 21:30.106 And one of my prayers for you and for our church is that we would walk with God, 21:30.866 --> 21:36.586 that we would love God, that we would trust God, that we would follow God, 21:36.586 --> 21:40.026 that our lives would be fully surrendered to him, 21:40.446 --> 21:45.546 and that we would commune with him along life's path. 21:46.763 --> 21:50.523 Now we live in a culture where everybody wants to be unique, 21:50.643 --> 21:52.763 but have you ever noticed everyone's doing the same thing? 21:53.123 --> 21:54.623 They're rebelling against God. 21:55.623 --> 21:58.623 If you want to be unique, let me tell you how. 21:59.023 --> 22:00.735 Walk with God. 22:00.736 --> 22:04.996 Enoch walked with God, and God used him greatly within our life. 22:05.236 --> 22:07.956 You know, we had cultural Christianity for so long, 22:08.096 --> 22:10.476 and whether people actually walked with God or not, 22:10.556 --> 22:13.956 they talked about it, and they acted like that was the thing. 22:14.436 --> 22:17.516 But now we live in a time, if you want to be a rebel, 22:17.976 --> 22:19.096 I can tell you how to do it. 22:19.176 --> 22:20.715 Walk with God. 22:20.716 --> 22:22.195 Serve the Lord. 22:22.196 --> 22:23.336 Live for the Lord. 22:23.336 --> 22:26.356 Be a beacon of light. 22:27.297 --> 22:32.797 and a person of salt within a dark and sinful world. 22:33.737 --> 22:39.877 Now, walking with God is not easy, but it is simple in many ways. 22:40.497 --> 22:42.777 When you walk with something, what do you do? 22:43.237 --> 22:44.536 Here's what you do. 22:44.537 --> 22:48.357 You head in the same direction as you talk. 22:49.537 --> 22:51.997 You see, walking with God involves three things. 22:51.997 --> 22:55.377 The first thing it involves is going in the same direction as God. 22:56.474 --> 23:03.894 And so you say, I want to have the same desires, the same vision, and the same goals for my life as God has for my life. 23:04.934 --> 23:07.794 Whatever God is doing, I want to join him. 23:08.414 --> 23:17.234 Whatever God wants to do in my life and through my life, I want to be a part of what God wants to do. 23:18.194 --> 23:21.814 And so walking with God is not my will be done. 23:22.414 --> 23:25.514 It is God, may your will be done. 23:26.258 --> 23:31.798 It's not getting God to join you and the direction you want to go. 23:32.578 --> 23:37.338 Like, God loves me and I have a wonderful plan for him to sign off on, you know. 23:37.538 --> 23:38.758 That's kind of the mentality. 23:39.438 --> 23:42.238 That's not what it's talking about when it says to walk with God. 23:42.238 --> 23:49.418 To walk with God is us joining God and going in the same direction as him. 23:50.458 --> 23:54.278 And so walking with God is aligning our heart with the great heart of God. 23:54.895 --> 23:57.555 aligning how we think with how God thinks, 23:58.235 --> 24:02.355 aligning the decisions and the priorities and the values of our life 24:02.355 --> 24:07.015 to be in a line with God's will and God's nature. 24:07.915 --> 24:14.395 The second thing is that walking with God involves spending time with God. 24:15.175 --> 24:17.595 You know, if you want an intimate relationship with anybody, 24:17.735 --> 24:18.875 you've got to spend time with them. 24:19.600 --> 24:25.460 And so you've got to spend time listening to God speak to you through his word and by his spirit. 24:26.340 --> 24:30.900 You've got to spend time speaking to God through prayer. 24:31.640 --> 24:39.880 Now, so often as we're walking along life's journey, there can be times where a heart begins to drift. 24:40.620 --> 24:46.840 You remember the song that we sing, prone to wonder, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love. 24:47.562 --> 24:50.242 And sometimes we don't mean to drift away from God, 24:50.362 --> 24:53.862 but life circumstances and the cares of this world come along 24:53.862 --> 24:57.102 and our heart just slowly drifts from the Lord. 24:57.402 --> 25:00.142 We spend time away from Him. 25:00.602 --> 25:04.462 Our hearts go cold and even at times silent, 25:04.642 --> 25:07.782 and we stop prioritizing time with the Lord. 25:07.942 --> 25:13.262 But when we spend time with God, He brings our heart back to beat with His heart. 25:13.786 --> 25:19.226 He brings our thinking back in alignment with His thinking and His Word. 25:19.226 --> 25:25.026 He brings the decisions of our life back into alignment with His will. 25:25.026 --> 25:30.186 Now, New Testament word that describes this is the word abide. 25:30.186 --> 25:37.926 Jesus says, you are to abide in me and I in you, and my word is to abide in you as well. 25:37.926 --> 25:43.126 Another way that the Bible describes this is walking in the Spirit. 25:43.132 --> 25:50.492 where you are walking under the influence, the leadership, and the direction and the power of the Holy Spirit. 25:51.132 --> 25:56.652 There are different metaphors that the Bible uses with different nuances of meaning, 25:56.652 --> 26:02.052 but all of them point to a personal and intimate relationship with God, 26:02.172 --> 26:07.752 where you love God, where you trust God, and where you're surrendered to follow God, 26:07.892 --> 26:10.572 and you want to be close to Him. 26:11.785 --> 26:15.425 Now the key to overcoming the attacks of the enemy 26:15.425 --> 26:18.625 is to spend time with God. 26:19.565 --> 26:21.845 I don't know about you, but when I'm not abiding, 26:22.565 --> 26:24.805 when I'm not spending time with the Lord, 26:25.665 --> 26:29.405 then the attacks of the enemy are like fiery arrows 26:29.405 --> 26:33.545 that lead me to sin and leave me wounded and hurting. 26:34.405 --> 26:36.165 But when I am abiding, 26:37.081 --> 26:40.621 When I am surrendered to the Lord, when I'm going in the same direction, 26:40.621 --> 26:43.661 when I am spending time with the Lord, 26:44.021 --> 26:48.241 the attacks of the enemy are like harmless ping pong balls 26:48.241 --> 26:50.181 that just bounce right off of me, you know. 26:50.521 --> 26:53.741 And you become impervious to the attacks of the enemy. 26:54.061 --> 26:57.841 Why? Because he who is in you is stronger than he who is in the world. 26:59.721 --> 27:01.961 Brothers and sisters, we're at war. 27:03.052 --> 27:04.472 And the enemy is strong. 27:04.592 --> 27:05.692 He's smarter than us. 27:05.752 --> 27:07.012 He's stronger than us. 27:07.132 --> 27:09.552 And he's been doing this a lot longer than us. 27:09.692 --> 27:11.892 He is good at what he does. 27:11.892 --> 27:17.232 And the defense that we have against him is to walk with God, 27:17.952 --> 27:21.392 to spend time with him in his word and in prayer 27:21.392 --> 27:24.952 and allow the Holy Spirit to empower us. 27:25.532 --> 27:31.132 The key to overcoming discouragement is to walk with God. 27:31.132 --> 27:38.172 When you begin to spend time with God, then suddenly your faith is strengthened, 27:38.172 --> 27:44.252 your love is deepened, and your walk with God becomes stronger and sweeter, and 27:44.252 --> 27:50.892 suddenly the problems of this life don't look so big in the light of the eternity 27:50.892 --> 27:54.132 of God's grace and mercy. 27:54.132 --> 27:58.792 The key to overcoming complacency and indifference is to walk with God 27:58.792 --> 28:02.912 because he gives us his heart and the fruit of the Spirit. 28:03.472 --> 28:06.772 The key to overcoming sin is to walk with God. 28:06.852 --> 28:10.592 The key to spiritual growth is to walk in the Spirit 28:10.592 --> 28:18.132 and to allow the Holy Spirit of God to produce the holiness of God within us. 28:18.128 --> 28:22.128 You see, when you spend time with God, 28:22.128 --> 28:28.268 you cannot help but be changed by the glory of God. 28:28.268 --> 28:30.648 I'm reminded of the disciples. 28:30.648 --> 28:35.348 After the resurrection of Jesus, they're a fiery witness for Christ, 28:35.348 --> 28:37.808 and they're looking at these guys and they say, 28:37.808 --> 28:40.688 well, they're untrained and uneducated men, 28:40.688 --> 28:45.408 but they noted that they had been with Jesus. 28:45.652 --> 28:50.532 See, I believe that the key to changing the world is to be with Jesus. 28:51.119 --> 28:57.139 Because when you spend time with Jesus, when you really get to know Jesus, you will change the world. 28:57.919 --> 29:12.999 You cannot help but be impacted and transformed by his love, by his goodness, by his glory, by his humility, by the glory and the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ. 29:12.999 --> 29:17.459 And so the key to spiritual growth is to spend time with God. 29:18.254 --> 29:26.454 So brothers and sisters, let's have open Bibles and let's have open hearts to let God have his way with us. 29:26.694 --> 29:34.414 Let's have an open life and open prayers and let God have his perfect work in us. 29:35.074 --> 29:40.714 The third thing that walking with God involves is saying no. 29:41.862 --> 29:48.042 You know, one of the most important words that you'll learn in life is the word no. 29:48.942 --> 29:52.722 We grow often with our no. 29:53.842 --> 29:54.861 It's important. 29:54.862 --> 29:59.542 If we're going to follow God, we have to create margin in our life. 30:00.182 --> 30:03.522 We have to prioritize spending time with God. 30:04.441 --> 30:07.021 You say, well, you know, I'm just too busy 30:07.021 --> 30:08.121 to spend time with God. 30:08.121 --> 30:10.081 I'm too busy to follow God. 30:10.081 --> 30:11.981 I've got too many things going on. 30:11.981 --> 30:12.820 Well, guess what? 30:12.821 --> 30:14.241 You're too busy. 30:14.241 --> 30:15.921 Stop it. 30:15.921 --> 30:17.581 Repent. 30:17.581 --> 30:21.061 Ask God to give you a new heart and new priorities. 30:21.061 --> 30:25.461 And you know, when God set aside the Sabbath, 30:25.461 --> 30:29.661 he sanctified time, meaning that time belongs to him. 30:29.661 --> 30:33.681 And God wants us to set aside time to spend with him. 30:34.580 --> 30:41.060 And so you've got to learn to say no to a lot of good things in order to grow in your relationship with the Lord. 30:42.260 --> 30:48.060 You've got to learn to say no to sin and distractions to follow the Lord. 30:48.440 --> 30:50.520 You grow with your no. 30:51.720 --> 30:55.060 My dad used to say that the good is the enemy of the best. 30:56.420 --> 30:59.620 And often we fill our life with so many good things. 31:00.719 --> 31:02.899 and we miss out on the best thing, 31:02.899 --> 31:05.419 which is spending time with God. 31:05.419 --> 31:08.379 The most important time of your day 31:08.379 --> 31:11.879 is the time that you spend with the Lord. 31:12.839 --> 31:14.619 And so you've got to learn to say no 31:14.619 --> 31:18.179 to a lot of good things so that you can say yes 31:18.179 --> 31:21.119 to going in the same direction as God 31:21.119 --> 31:23.699 while you're communing with him. 31:25.059 --> 31:27.699 Now I want you to notice that Enoch 31:27.699 --> 31:29.499 lived shorter than anyone else. 31:30.790 --> 31:35.010 but he made the biggest difference because he walked with God. 31:35.010 --> 31:38.250 It's not the length of your life 31:38.250 --> 31:41.350 but the quality of your walk with God 31:41.350 --> 31:43.630 that really matters. 31:43.630 --> 31:47.310 So brothers and sisters let's pursue the Lord. 31:47.310 --> 31:49.590 Let's spend time with Him. 31:49.590 --> 31:51.630 Let's walk with Him. 31:51.630 --> 31:52.710 And let's 31:52.710 --> 31:56.010 let Him do what He wants to do. 31:56.010 --> 31:57.270 Notice 31:57.270 --> 32:00.670 what it says in verse number twenty-five. 32:00.659 --> 32:04.759 It says, "'Methuselah lived 187 years and begot Lamech. 32:05.059 --> 32:09.919 After he begot Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had sons and daughters. 32:10.259 --> 32:14.719 So all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died. 32:15.319 --> 32:18.159 Lamech lived 182 years and had a son. 32:18.579 --> 32:20.299 And he called his name Noah, saying, 32:20.419 --> 32:24.259 "'This one will comfort us concerning the work and the toil of our hands 32:24.259 --> 32:27.079 because of the ground which the Lord has cursed.'" 32:27.085 --> 32:32.785 After he begot Noah, Lamech lived 595 years and had sons and daughters. 32:33.045 --> 32:37.185 So all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died. 32:37.685 --> 32:43.465 And Noah was 500 years old, and Noah begot Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 32:46.103 --> 32:50.463 Now Genesis chapter 5 has been called the death chapter of the Bible 32:50.463 --> 32:54.583 because over and over again, notice it says, 32:54.583 --> 33:00.003 this guy was born, he lived, he had a son, he had more kids, 33:00.263 --> 33:03.543 and then he died, and then he died, and then he died. 33:04.263 --> 33:05.323 Now that's unique. 33:06.269 --> 33:10.309 Because most genealogies don't say, and then he died. 33:10.309 --> 33:12.009 It's just kind of assumed. 33:12.009 --> 33:15.209 Because they're following the lineage of the sons 33:15.209 --> 33:18.229 and the fathers and so forth. 33:18.229 --> 33:23.229 And so what God is pointing out is that since sin came, 33:24.029 --> 33:27.289 death has reigned over humanity. 33:27.278 --> 33:31.898 Did you know that God did not create us to die? 33:31.898 --> 33:34.658 God created us to live. 33:34.658 --> 33:42.958 Life comes from the living God, but death has come from sin. 33:42.958 --> 33:48.058 The Bible says that we are all sinners by nature and by choice. 33:48.058 --> 33:55.098 We have inherited sin nature by Adam, but we also have freely chosen to sin. 33:55.088 --> 33:59.288 And so the Bible says all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God 33:59.288 --> 34:02.788 and that the wages of sin is death. 34:02.948 --> 34:07.248 But there's good news, and that is that the gift of God is eternal life 34:07.248 --> 34:08.888 in Christ Jesus our Lord. 34:09.508 --> 34:13.648 Listen to what it says in 1 Corinthians 15 and verse 22. 34:13.648 --> 34:15.548 It says, 34:15.808 --> 34:23.948 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. 34:24.940 --> 34:27.480 In the Bible, you have two families. 34:28.100 --> 34:29.600 You have the family of Adam, 34:30.180 --> 34:33.820 and then you have the family of Christ, who is the second Adam. 34:34.780 --> 34:37.360 In Adam's family, all die. 34:37.360 --> 34:42.320 In Christ's family, all will be made alive. 34:43.452 --> 34:47.112 In Adam's family, death reigns. 34:47.112 --> 34:51.312 In Jesus's family, life reigns. 34:51.312 --> 34:53.872 And the Bible says when we come to Christ 34:53.872 --> 34:57.372 as our Lord and Savior, that we are born again, 34:57.372 --> 35:00.572 that we are made alive in him, 35:00.572 --> 35:03.632 and God gives us eternal life. 35:04.532 --> 35:08.032 I think one of the points that we see in this passage 35:08.032 --> 35:12.472 is that it's never too late in life to get saved. 35:13.102 --> 35:18.602 Did you notice that Enoch began to walk with God when he was 65 years old? 35:19.342 --> 35:26.762 He was the first to overcome death because Hebrews tells us that by faith he walked with God. 35:27.182 --> 35:36.742 The only way to overcome sin and to overcome death is by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ to walk with God. 35:37.503 --> 35:43.103 In fact, the New Testament tells us that Enoch was a prophet and he prophesied about the second coming of Christ, 35:43.223 --> 35:47.303 that he would come with thousands of his saints. 35:48.343 --> 35:53.503 Now Satan comes along and he says, you know, you can give your life to Christ, but do it later. 35:54.378 --> 35:55.658 Now is not the time. 35:56.198 --> 35:59.598 You need to sow your wild oats, and you need to do what you want, 35:59.678 --> 36:02.998 and you need to be in control of your life, and you need to be Lord for a while, 36:02.998 --> 36:05.898 and you can always give your life to Christ later. 36:06.498 --> 36:09.638 But the reality is we're never guaranteed later, are we? 36:10.438 --> 36:14.678 Because at some point, you and I are going to be added to this genealogy. 36:15.860 --> 36:20.040 And it's going to be said of us, and he died or she died. 36:20.700 --> 36:23.620 Because the Bible says we all die. 36:24.620 --> 36:26.320 And so there's a sense of urgency. 36:27.335 --> 36:30.155 Life is short and it's fleeting. 36:30.795 --> 36:32.415 Tomorrow is not guaranteed. 36:32.615 --> 36:35.995 The Bible says today is the day of salvation. 36:36.335 --> 36:37.695 But here's the good news. 36:38.655 --> 36:43.395 God is patient and he is gracious toward us. 36:44.215 --> 36:48.315 Now the name Methuselah means when he is dead, it will come. 36:48.835 --> 36:55.415 And so Enoch in naming his son is prophesying about the flood that is to come. 36:55.870 --> 37:00.310 Now Enoch lived 969 years, longer than anyone else. 37:00.350 --> 37:02.009 That's not a coincidence. 37:02.010 --> 37:06.190 And when he added up, he died in the year that the great flood began. 37:07.050 --> 37:13.350 And so what we see is that God is patiently and graciously waiting 37:13.350 --> 37:18.090 to give people the opportunity to repent and to be saved. 37:19.170 --> 37:21.650 Now Lamech names his son Noah. 37:22.290 --> 37:24.990 And the name Noah means rest or relief. 37:25.807 --> 37:33.087 And Lamech says that Noah is going to bring us comfort concerning the curse. 37:33.847 --> 37:39.127 Now the comfort that Noah will bring is that through him will come the promised Messiah 37:39.127 --> 37:44.507 who will save humanity from this mess that we find ourselves in. 37:45.213 --> 37:49.513 And so in the midst of all this horrible sin, in the midst of all this death, 37:49.513 --> 37:57.353 there is still hope that a Savior will come and will bring salvation and restore us back to God. 37:58.353 --> 38:06.293 Now in the book of Revelation, there's another book of names called the Lamb's Book of Life. 38:07.184 --> 38:11.684 The Bible says everyone who puts their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, 38:12.324 --> 38:17.044 their name is going to be written in that book. 38:18.264 --> 38:19.684 Did you know that God knows your name? 38:21.044 --> 38:25.184 God knows everything about you, but he wants you to know him. 38:26.219 --> 38:29.019 God cares about you and God loves you. 38:29.019 --> 38:37.939 And if you are not saved, he is waiting for you, graciously waiting for you to repent and believe and be saved. 38:38.759 --> 38:46.699 The Bible says that the reason that Jesus has not come yet is he is not desiring that any would perish, but that all would come to repentance. 38:47.779 --> 38:49.859 God's desire is that you would be saved. 38:50.139 --> 38:53.759 And aren't you glad that Jesus waited long enough for you to be saved? 38:54.139 --> 38:55.299 I know I am. 38:56.240 --> 38:58.840 And Jesus is waiting for others to be saved. 38:58.840 --> 39:00.300 And maybe that's you this morning. 39:00.300 --> 39:03.880 He is waiting to come, but there's gonna come a day 39:03.880 --> 39:07.540 when the trumpet will sound and the clouds will part 39:07.540 --> 39:09.000 and Jesus will return. 39:09.000 --> 39:11.460 And then it's gonna be too late. 39:12.740 --> 39:15.240 The Bible says that Jesus died on the cross 39:15.240 --> 39:17.720 to pay the penalty for our sin. 39:17.720 --> 39:22.880 Jesus took our sin and he died in our place. 39:24.016 --> 39:30.576 And every person must repent of their sin and trust in Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior. 39:31.596 --> 39:34.236 God doesn't have any grandchildren, only children. 39:35.376 --> 39:41.536 You must make the choice to put your faith and your trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. 39:41.536 --> 39:53.076 And then and only then, by God's grace, can you walk with God and, like Enoch, overcome death. 39:54.492 --> 39:58.792 Let's bow together for a word of prayer as we prepare to pray. 39:59.972 --> 40:04.552 Here in a moment, we're going to have a time of invitation, a time of worship, 40:04.652 --> 40:07.272 and I want to invite you to come and to give your life to Christ. 40:08.252 --> 40:11.212 There will be counselors and others here at the front. 40:12.132 --> 40:14.512 You can come forward and say, I want to give my life to Christ. 40:16.392 --> 40:18.472 I want to, by faith, walk with God. 40:19.492 --> 40:22.932 I want to know God and enjoy God, and I want eternal life. 40:25.070 --> 40:30.070 We invite you to come and to begin to walk with God 40:30.810 --> 40:32.610 by faith in Jesus Christ. 40:34.170 --> 40:36.090 Maybe this morning you've given your life to Christ, 40:36.090 --> 40:38.330 but you've never followed him in believers baptism, 40:38.330 --> 40:39.330 and you would like to come 40:40.932 --> 40:48.792 like many have today, and say, I am not ashamed of the Lord Jesus Christ. He died for me. He rose 40:48.792 --> 40:54.472 again. And because of that, I'm going to be saved. And someday I'm going to rise from the dead as 40:54.472 --> 41:00.312 well. Maybe this morning you'd like to come and say, I put my faith in Christ, but I need to be 41:00.312 --> 41:05.052 baptized to publicly identify and profess my faith in Christ. 41:06.751 --> 41:11.431 Maybe this morning, God's leading you to join this church, 41:11.431 --> 41:15.531 to say, I wanna be a part of a spiritual family 41:16.511 --> 41:20.111 of people who love Jesus and love me, 41:20.111 --> 41:22.391 people who are thinking generationally, 41:22.391 --> 41:25.391 people who wanna invest 41:25.398 --> 41:28.238 in the next generation, in the generation after that, 41:28.318 --> 41:33.178 to be a part of God's plan and purpose here in Bakersfield and around the world. 41:34.098 --> 41:36.538 You come, and we'd love to talk to you about that, 41:36.618 --> 41:39.598 and
