book of 02:15.668 --> 02:20.340 Revelation in chapter 16, and Revelation 19 tells us that the 02:20.406 --> 02:24.143 false prophet will be tossed along with the infamous beast of 02:24.210 --> 02:30.316 Revelation into the lake of fire at the return of Jesus Christ. 02:30.383 --> 02:32.318 But the false prophet is introduced to us 02:32.385 --> 02:35.321 in chapter 13 of Revelation. 02:35.388 --> 02:37.423 In the first portion of that chapter, 02:37.490 --> 02:39.792 we read of the beast of Revelation, 02:39.859 --> 02:43.329 used to refer to both an individual and the political 02:43.396 --> 02:46.833 entity he controls: a world-ruling, 02:46.900 --> 02:51.771 end-of-time, Satan-inspired political entity that will 02:51.838 --> 02:55.441 possess astonishing economic and military power. 02:55.508 --> 02:59.112 On our program, we often refer to this entity as "the beast 02:59.178 --> 03:02.148 power," and verse 4, of Revelation 13, 03:02.215 --> 03:07.287 says, "They worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast, 03:07.353 --> 03:09.622 and they worshiped the beast, saying, 03:09.689 --> 03:11.758 'Who is like the beast? 03:11.824 --> 03:14.527 Who is able to make war with him?'" 03:14.594 --> 03:18.231 We will read more about this beast today since his role in 03:18.298 --> 03:22.769 the end times is intimately entwined with the false prophet. 03:22.835 --> 03:27.707 However, Revelation 13, then speaks of a second beast. 03:27.774 --> 03:31.477 We read about this separate person symbolized by a second 03:31.544 --> 03:36.482 beast, beginning in verse 11: "Then I saw another beast coming 03:36.549 --> 03:41.688 up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke 03:41.754 --> 03:43.389 like a dragon." 03:43.456 --> 03:47.694 This beast is the partner of the beast of Revelation, 03:47.760 --> 03:50.363 mentioned just before, and is called elsewhere, 03:50.430 --> 03:53.733 the false prophet, and this description, 03:53.800 --> 03:58.037 given in verse 11, is crucial to understanding his nature. 03:58.104 --> 04:02.442 Notice, he looks like a Lamb, Jesus Christ, 04:02.508 --> 04:06.546 but speaks like the dragon, Satan, the devil. 04:06.613 --> 04:10.617 If one listens carefully to his teachings and doctrines, 04:10.683 --> 04:14.187 one can discern that they're the teachings not of Christ 04:14.253 --> 04:15.688 but of the devil. 04:15.755 --> 04:17.523 Wallace Smith: But, please, note that doesn't mean 04:17.590 --> 04:20.293 these teachings are obviously evil. 04:20.360 --> 04:22.395 Satan is the master of deception, 04:22.462 --> 04:26.566 and the old King James Version of the Bible says of Satan in 04:26.633 --> 04:31.104 Genesis 3, in verse 1, "The serpent was more subtil 04:31.170 --> 04:33.506 than any beast of the field." 04:33.573 --> 04:37.944 His twists of true biblical doctrine are subtle, 04:38.011 --> 04:41.514 hard to discern, and convincing. 04:41.581 --> 04:43.316 In addition to describing his teachings, 04:43.383 --> 04:47.654 Revelation 13, continues, "He performs great signs, 04:47.720 --> 04:52.959 so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in 04:53.026 --> 04:54.560 the sight of men. 04:54.627 --> 04:59.265 And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs 04:59.332 --> 05:03.636 which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast." 05:03.703 --> 05:05.738 Now, it might surprise some of our viewers that such 05:05.805 --> 05:09.142 supernatural signs and wonders could be worked 05:09.208 --> 05:11.277 by a false prophet. 05:11.344 --> 05:15.181 Aren't such works only possible by God's power? 05:15.248 --> 05:18.618 The Bible says, no, that is not the case. 05:18.685 --> 05:23.089 In fact, a miracle-working precursor to the false prophet 05:23.156 --> 05:26.526 in the first century was Simon the Sorcerer, 05:26.592 --> 05:28.661 often called Simon Magus. 05:28.728 --> 05:32.765 He is described in the book of Acts in chapter 8: "But there 05:32.832 --> 05:37.403 was a certain man called Simon, who previously practiced sorcery 05:37.470 --> 05:40.973 in the city and astonished the people of Samaria, 05:41.040 --> 05:43.309 claiming that he was someone great, 05:43.376 --> 05:47.513 to whom they all gave heed, from the least to the greatest, 05:47.580 --> 05:52.051 saying, 'This man is the great power of God.' 05:52.118 --> 05:55.354 And they heeded him because he had astonished them 05:55.421 --> 05:58.357 with his sorceries for a long time." 05:58.424 --> 06:03.563 Simon Magus was a sorcerer and not a man of God at all though 06:03.629 --> 06:05.465 the people thought he was so. 06:05.531 --> 06:09.435 His power to work signs and wonders came not from God but 06:09.502 --> 06:10.970 from the of Revelation 13, 08:42.421 --> 08:46.592 will cause all people to obey the first beast, 08:46.659 --> 08:50.696 symbolically taking his mark on their right hand or forehead. 08:50.763 --> 08:56.736 This is tied, in verse 18, to the mysterious number 666. 08:56.802 --> 09:01.874 It is the beast of Revelation, a political entity and its leader 09:01.941 --> 09:05.111 wielding unfathomable economic, political, 09:05.177 --> 09:08.581 and military power that provides the muscle, 09:08.648 --> 09:13.519 but we see here that it is the false prophet who is using this 09:13.586 --> 09:16.555 beast for his own purposes, as well, 09:16.622 --> 09:20.826 in an unholy union of church and state power. 09:20.893 --> 09:23.996 We see this relationship dramatically pictured in 09:24.063 --> 09:26.699 Revelation chapter 17. 09:26.766 --> 09:31.103 There, the apostle John is told in vision by an angel that he 09:31.170 --> 09:34.240 will show the apostle the religious system controlling 09:34.307 --> 09:37.276 affairs in the end times. 09:37.343 --> 09:41.080 "So he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness. 09:41.147 --> 09:45.384 And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of 09:45.451 --> 09:50.256 names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 09:50.323 --> 09:54.260 The woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet and adorned with 09:54.327 --> Revelation we've already discussed, 10:37.003 --> 10:42.708 but riding that beast and influencing it is a great harlot 10:42.775 --> 10:46.445 drinking in abominations and drunk on the blood of 10:46.512 --> 10:49.815 persecuted, true followers of Jesus Christ, 10:49.882 --> 10:53.185 much like the bloody inquisitions of ages past but 10:53.252 --> 10:55.054 far surpassing them. 10:55.121 --> 10:56.389 Wallace Smith: In the Bible, 10:56.455 --> 10:59.558 God uses women to symbolize religious systems, 10:59.625 --> 11:04.163 and prostitution to symbolize corruptions of the true faith 11:04.230 --> 11:06.232 with pagan religious practices. 11:06.298 --> 11:10.202 Ancient Israel did this with the faith God had given them, 11:10.269 --> 11:14.106 and this end-time false Christianity does this with the 11:14.173 --> 11:18.944 faith of the Bible, mixing it with sinful pagan practices God 11:19.011 --> 11:23.149 does not approve, endorse, or command. 11:23.215 --> 11:26.786 This harlot pictures the deceptive religious system, 11:26.852 --> 11:31.157 headed by the false prophet, and we see it influencing the beast 11:31.223 --> 11:33.692 and benefiting from its power. 11:33.759 --> 11:38.230 The union of these two powers and their institutions will be a 11:38.297 --> 11:42.201 tempestuous one, yet they will need each other. 11:42.268 --> 11:44.136 Wallace Smith: Chapter 2, of the book of Daniel, 11:44.203 --> 11:47.273 describes the kingdom of the beast of Revelation 11:47.339 --> 11:50.543 as being like a mixture of iron and clay, 11:50.609 --> 11:55.514 noting that the peoples of this entity do not mix well together. 11:55.581 --> 11:59.085 This political entity will need the religious influence of the 11:59.151 --> 12:03.022 false prophet to keep the people bound together, 12:03.089 --> 12:06.225 and the false prophet uses the beast 12:06.292 --> 12:09.028 for his own purposes as well. 12:09.095 --> 12:12.731 Several prophecies of the Bible explain how this deceptive 12:12.798 --> 12:17.436 end-time religious leader desires to suppress the true 12:17.503 --> 12:20.573 understanding of God, his commandments, 12:20.639 --> 12:25.678 and his laws, and to persecute the true church of God. 12:25.744 --> 12:28.581 As Daniel chapter 7, in verse 25, 12:28.647 --> 12:32.751 says of this individual, "He shall speak pompous words 12:32.818 --> 12:36.655 against the Most High, shall persecute the saints of the Most 12:36.722 --> 12:41.760 High, and shall intend to change times and law. 12:41.827 --> 12:46.198 Then the saints shall be given into his hand for a time and 12:46.265 --> 12:49.101 times and half a time." 12:49.168 --> 12:52.805 Now, this "time, times and half a time," or three and a half 12:52.872 --> 12:56.942 years, represents the period of the Great Tribulation and the 12:57.009 --> 12:59.812 Day of the Lord to come upon the earth, 12:59.879 --> 13:03.883 during which many true Christians will be martyred at 13:03.949 --> 13:06.685 the command of this false religious leader, 13:06.752 --> 13:11.724 and he will use the raw military power and political resources of 13:11.790 --> 13:15.828 the beast to accomplish his diabolical purposes. 13:15.895 --> 13:21.600 And notice the false prophet's desire to change times and law. 13:21.667 --> 13:23.769 We'll come back to that later. 13:23.836 --> 17:31.116 Look in 1 John chapter 2. 17:31.183 --> 17:35.087 We see there that John also wrote in the first century to 17:35.154 --> 17:40.225 say that this lawless false Christianity was already being 17:40.292 --> 17:43.061 put in place back in his day. 17:43.128 --> 17:45.864 "Little children, it is the last hour, 17:45.931 --> 17:49.868 and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, John's day, shortly after the very foundation of the 18:01.647 --> 18:06.351 true church, another false version of Christianity was also 18:06.418 --> 18:11.089 being founded, and here we see John naming those who come in 18:11.156 --> 18:14.593 its name, including the false prophet to come, 18:14.660 --> 18:18.997 by a word many have heard before, "Antichrist." 18:19.064 --> 18:23.902 The prefix, "anti," can imply "against," "in opposition to," 18:23.969 --> 18:28.440 or "in place of," and the false prophet will be the climactic 18:28.507 --> 18:33.579 end-time Antichrist and the leader of the religion that well 18:33.645 --> 18:37.115 deserves the label "Antichrist," a religion that, 18:37.182 --> 18:40.552 from the beginning of true Christianity in the first 18:40.619 --> 18:43.889 century, has been working to replace it 18:43.956 --> 18:46.391 with a lawless counterfeit. 18:46.458 --> 18:49.895 In fact, in 1 John chapter 4, in verse 3, 18:49.962 --> 18:52.998 the apostle says that "the counterfeit spirit of Antichrist 18:53.065 --> 18:57.002 was already in the world," in his time, 18:57.069 --> 19:00.606 and we must remember this counterfeit will look Christian 19:00.672 --> 19:02.007 in appearance. 19:02.074 --> 19:05.277 Revelation 13, says the false prophet appears 19:05.344 --> 19:07.346 to be like the lamb. 19:07.412 --> 19:10.782 The apostle Paul spoke of those teaching such deceptive 19:10.849 --> 19:15.220 forgeries of the true faith when he warned those in Corinth in 2 19:15.287 --> 19:20.325 Corinthians 11, "For if he who comes preaches another Jesus 19:20.392 --> 19:24.997 whom we have not preached, or if you receive a different spirit 19:25.063 --> 19:28.567 which you have not received, or a different gospel which you
